Blog #4: Chapter 4
The chapter then discusses putting relationships first. In this subtitle, we learn that relationships matter. This part of the chapter emphasizes the fact that relationships need to be nurtured and maintained to be successful. Relationships in your personal life must be maintained just as much as the ones in your professional life. Have you ever had a very successful relationship with someone in a professional setting? How has it made your experience in your profession better? Making sure we establish trust is one of the key factors in upholding a positive and successful relationship. "Trust, empathy, and reciprocity bond members together in any community or social setting." (Hall and Nussbaum-Beach, p.60). We must also be aware of our actions online when it comes to virtual relationships. Trust means having shared values and repeated desired behaviors among individuals. So, what we do or say online may affect the trust we are trying to build. But not only must we build trust to have a good relationship with one another, but we must also foster collegiality. This is very difficult to achieve due to these types of relationships cause real change. "These relationships are characterized by conversations, practice, problems, and solutions" that can be held or discussed to help your place of work overall. (Hall and Nussbaum-Beach, p.63). Another one of the most important factors that go into creating a good relationship is creating a shared vision. Doing this allows members to be able to visualize goals for the future and always try to move forward. This calls for lots of discussion and planning among members in the collaborative relationship. When it comes to the collaborative relationship, there are many steps or stages to follow as well. In order, the steps are forming, storming, morning, and performing.
Chapter four then moves on to discuss how we need to put people's needs at the forefront of relationships. Individual issues should come first and should be addressed immediately. Ensuring that members care about other members will only increase the level of the relationship. Not only should collaboration be done to maintain the relationships but it should also be modeled in practice. "Through technology, we gain a deeper understanding of the world and help prepare students for an unknown future." (Hall and Nussbaum-Beach, p. 68). As a future educator, it is important to make sure students start to get comfortable at an early age collaborating with students of a different culture in both the physical and virtual worlds. But before we can teach this to students, we must learn how to do this first ourselves as educators.

ReplyDeleteHi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteGreat work! I agree with your statement of getting students comfortable with collaborating online and in person, especially in today's world with all of the technology available. Having good relationships with your future students and their families is very important and appreciated by many. I will also need good relationships with my patients when I become a physical therapist. This is a great attribute to have when working with others.
Hi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteGreat summary of chapter 4. I like your connection to your future profession as a teacher. I feel like most teachers deal with a lot of collaborations so this is a good chapter to focus on. Collaboration with other teachers can help you learn teaching methods and new techniques.
Hi Lauren!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that collaboration in necessary in everyone's future career, but especially with yours. Teachers need to work together to build effective class curriculums that help students learn. When I wrote my review I talked a lot about how to further the established relationships, trust is needed as well. Trust helps further your collaborative network and allows for those groups to collectively and effectively work together. Another important thing the chapter demonstrated is further the collaboration of the group. Important ideas like forming, storming, norming, and performing. As a future probation officer it is important that I come into the job with a fresh mind and attitude. I need to build relationships with the officers already there, while also slowing helping change things for the better. The officers that are already there have an established culture that may need to be re-worked and changed for the better. I really like your connection of getting the students to collaborate as well!
Hi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI really like the connection you made from chapter 4 to your future profession as a teacher. I agree with you that relationships and collaborations can and will make or break you as a professional. As a physical therapist, if I don't make any connection with my patients, why would they want to come back to me? Especially older adults who really look for that connection and collaboration with people. I also like how you mentioned teacher-teacher relationships are just as important as teacher-student relationships. I've experience too many times where teachers have great relationships with other teachers but poor relationships with students, and vice versa. As a physical therapist, the same is true. The relationships with my coworkers will be just as important as relationships with my patients.
Hi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteAs you work towards your future career as a teacher there are a lot of points from Chapter 4 that stand out. For example, building trust is going to be a major point in this career as you will get to know each of your students. It is also important to have trust with everyone in your community as an educator. Having a shared vision is also going to be important as you will help your students work towards their future goals. Loved this post!
